mad science flashback
once in a while i get these urges to do something. ok most of the time i do... to eat, to drink, to work, to write, to break into song.
now i have this urge to write. my poor blog has been neglected, not that anyone reads it. (ayan fishing ulit ako... kc naman magparamdam ang mga nakakabasa. hahaha) as i write, eureka's on tv. yeah, i like the show. there's just something cool about living in a community of geeks. i'd like to believe there's a place such as this. where people are allowed to play with all sorts of cool gadgets (that they've created).
how cool is that? i've always had this insatiable curiosity to know ... stuff. my first foray into reverse engineering was when i was around 5 or 6? i had this mickey mouse watch and wondered how it worked. next thing i knew i was holding one of mickey's hands and little gears and screws all around me. how i managed to pry it open, i don't know. i do remember someone getting mad at me for destroying a perfectly good watch. bad kid. our helpers at that time did make sure the tv was out of reach after the incident. :)
lesson to self, when i do get a kid (how do you get a kid? hahaha), i won't get mad at her/him for expressing curiosity.
around grade 4, i decided to turn one of the storage rooms into a mad science lab. suffice it to say i got interested in the finer aspects of chemistry. a bunch of friends from school also had the same passion for science. was teenage mutant ninja turtles popular at that time? one of our many concoctions was green gooey slime. must've gotten inspiration from that show. no i did not have an alcohol lamp, improvised by using a candle. but we did have a tripod and beaker. (i think maybe my parents, titas, or titos had the same passion for science, since i just found those in the storage room) they all thought i was trying to burn the house down.
lesson learned, always have a fire extinguisher nearby. or a pail of water.
summers were spent climbing trees. it just so happened that one of those trees was outside where my parents worked. at one time while walking outside with a client my mother looked up and saw me hanging from a branch. "i have a monkey for a daughter" was all she could say, followed by "naku anak, baba ka na at baka mahulog ka". i forgot if i obeyed her. hahaha. hmm, what else? building our own houses from discarded wood and sacks. creating our own swords, bow and arrows. yes, i did manage to break my father's saw. i used a saw that was supposed to be used for metal to cut wood. i had difficulty sitting down after he found out.
lesson learned, allow kids to climb trees, express their creativity, explore on their own.
and yes, i did own a couple of barbie dolls and other doll-like toys. but that's where my sister expressed her creativity most, by giving her dolls haircuts. :D
now, i just lose myself in the written and digital world. not that i've lost interest in tinkering with stuff.
hmm... to climb trees once more, explore the unknown, to experiment.
life is indeed fascinating. :)
